What might be happening

Based on your symptoms, there are a few possibilities:

  • Common Cold: This is a viral infection in your nose and throat. It's usually harmless, although it might not feel that way. Common symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, congestion, slight body aches or a mild headache, sneezing, low-grade fever, and generally feeling unwell (malaise).

    • Treatment: There's no cure for a common cold, but you can relieve your symptoms by resting, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter cold remedies.
  • Influenza (Flu): This is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs. Influenza is commonly called the flu, but it's not the same as stomach "flu" viruses that cause diarrhea and vomiting. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

    • Treatment: Antiviral drugs can treat flu illness and prevent serious flu complications.
  • Sinusitis: This is a common condition in which the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed. It's usually caused by a viral infection and often improves within two or three weeks. The symptoms are similar to a cold but also involve pain and tenderness in the face (near the sinuses), a high temperature, and a headache.

    • Treatment: Most people with sinusitis will feel better within 2 to 3 weeks and can look after themselves at home. You can help relieve your symptoms by taking over-the-counter painkillers, drinking plenty of fluids, and getting plenty of rest.

Please remember that this is not an exhaustive list and other conditions could also explain your symptoms.

What you can do

  1. Rest and hydrate: Make sure you're getting plenty of sleep at night and staying hydrated during the day. This can help your body fight off an infection and speed up recovery.

  2. Over-the-counter remedies: Over-the-counter cold remedies can help alleviate symptoms like a runny nose, congestion, and body aches. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the packaging.

  3. Warm liquids: Warm liquids such as tea or soup can soothe a sore throat and provide relief from cold symptoms.

  4. Humidifier: Using a humidifier can help keep your throat and nasal passages moist and relieve congestion.

What you should look out for

If your symptoms worsen or you develop new symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, chest pain or other worrying symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. If your symptoms persist for more than a week, or are not improving, you should also seek medical attention.
