What might be happening
Based on the symptoms you've described, here are a few possibilities:
-
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): This condition is characterized by extreme fatigue that can't be explained by any underlying medical condition. The fatigue worsens with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest. This condition also often involves difficulties with memory and concentration ("brain fog").
- There's no single test to confirm a diagnosis of CFS. You may need a variety of medical tests to rule out other health problems that have similar symptoms. Treatment for CFS focuses on symptom relief.
-
Hypothyroidism: This is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of certain crucial hormones. Hypothyroidism may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages, but over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and brain fog.
- Diagnosis of hypothyroidism is based on your symptoms and the results of blood tests that measure the level of TSH and sometimes the level of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. A low level of thyroxine and high level of TSH indicate an underactive thyroid.
-
Fibromyalgia: This is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.
- Fibromyalgia is often diagnosed when other conditions have been ruled out. Treatment typically includes both medication and non-drug therapies such as exercise, relaxation techniques and stress-reduction measures.
What you can do
- Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
- Stay active. Regular exercise can boost your energy levels, but be careful not to overdo it.
- Eat a balanced diet. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can give you more energy.
- Try to manage your stress. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or tai chi may help.
What you should look out for
You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- Severe worsening of your fatigue
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Severe headache
- Any other severe symptoms
Please remember that while I strive to provide accurate information, I'm not a doctor. You should consult with a healthcare professional who can consider your full medical history and current health status to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan.
