[22M] Experiencing a Range of Symptoms Including Body Aches and Sharp Headaches

Patient Description

A 22-year-old male has been experiencing a variety of symptoms for several months, including severe body aches that move around the body, sharp headaches primarily around the temples and behind the eyes, and abdominal pain described as crampy and sometimes sharp. The patient also reports excessive sweating, particularly in the afternoons, and occasional chills. Eye pain, described as sharp and severe, has been present for about 5 months. Confusion, brain fog, and dizziness have also been worsening over the past few months. The patient has been managing body aches with pain medication and CBD. A thyroid issue diagnosed approximately 5 months ago is being treated with Armour Thyroid (15 mg daily for 3 months). The patient also uses Kratom powder multiple times a day for pain and has a prescription for bupropion (150mg), which is taken irregularly, approximately 3 days a week. The patient has a history of plant allergies but no known medication allergies.

What might be happening

Based on the information you've provided, here are some possible explanations for your symptoms:

  • Fibromyalgia: This is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in the muscles and bones, areas of tenderness, and general fatigue. Symptoms like the ones you've described, such as body aches, headaches, and abdominal pain, are common in fibromyalgia. However, fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning it is only considered after other potential causes have been ruled out.

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): This condition causes persistent fatigue that can't be fully explained by an underlying medical condition. The fatigue worsens with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest. Other symptoms can include headaches, confusion or "brain fog", and joint pain.

  • Thyroid Disorders: You mentioned that you have a thyroid issue and are taking medication for it. Both hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels) and hyperthyroidism (high thyroid hormone levels) can cause a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, body aches, and confusion.

  • Side Effects of Medication or Supplements: Some of your symptoms may be side effects of the medications or supplements you're taking. Bupropion can cause headaches, and Kratom has been associated with symptoms like confusion and abdominal pain.

Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of all possible conditions, and these conditions may not fully explain all of your symptoms.

What you can do

  1. Consult a healthcare provider: Given the range and severity of your symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination, order tests, and provide a more accurate diagnosis.

  2. Monitor your symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including when they occur, how long they last, and any potential triggers. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

  3. Manage your thyroid condition: Continue taking your thyroid medication as prescribed. If you're still experiencing symptoms, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your medication.

  4. Consider the impact of your medications and supplements: Talk to your healthcare provider about the medications and supplements you're taking, including Kratom and bupropion. They can help determine if these are contributing to your symptoms.

What you should look out for

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe headache
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Confusion or difficulty staying awake

Remember, this advice is intended to be general in nature, and specific causes may not apply to your situation. Always consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate examination, testing, and care recommendations.

I have a friend who had been experiencing very similar symptoms for almost a year. She did not have thyroid issues that she was aware of. She had been using Kratom several times a day for many months prior to the migrating pain and gastrointestinal disturbances began. She did not stop using Kratom during the first year of her medical issues. She increased her usage to help manage the pain and the headaches got worse. She was also a Kava drinker at the time. She decided to stop the Kava and the Kratom to use some other treatment she discovered through a Shaman in a Native American Tribe because he asked her too not mix the infusions he was giving her. Before she even began using the new teas all her aches and pains diminished. Her headaches stopped. Her guts settled down. Her fatigue and subsequent depression lifted. Her sleep habits returned to normal. We still can't say why everything cleared up after her Kava and Kratom use had been stopped for about 10 days. She used both substances long before the symptoms started so we can't imagine it was either of those things but maybe. She had not changed anything else. If you started using Kratom to manage your pain it may make it worse would be my concern. I used Kratom and Kava occasionally myself for the anti anxiety effects they offered me. I never had side effects from either. Still I don't use that anymore in support of my friend and kind of out of fear it will make me sick too. I have other issues that need no additional input. Hope you get to the bottom of your condition. Take care.
