What might be happening
Based on the symptoms you've described, you may be experiencing:
-
Tension Headache: This is a common type of headache characterized by a dull aching sensation all over the head. It is often described as a feeling of a tight band or dull ache around the head or behind the eyes. These headaches are often related to stress, depression, anxiety, a head injury, or holding your head and neck in an abnormal position.
- Treatment typically involves pain relievers and other treatments, such as biofeedback and stress management.
-
Dehydration: This occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don't replace lost fluids, you may get dehydrated. Common causes of dehydration include intense bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, fever or excessive sweating.
- Treatment involves replenishing your body's water supply. This can usually be done by drinking clear fluids, such as water, clear broths or noncaffeinated beverages.
-
Stress or Anxiety: These are common experiences for most people. In fact, 70% of adults in the United States say they feel stress or anxiety daily. Symptoms can include headache, muscle tension, chest tightness, fatigue, sleep problems, and stomach pain.
- Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes, therapy, and medications.
-
Lack of Sleep or Insomnia: This is a sleep disorder in which you have trouble falling and/or staying asleep. The condition can be short-term (acute) or can last a long time (chronic). It may also come and go.
- Treatment for insomnia can include lifestyle changes, counseling, and medications.
What you can do
- Try to get enough sleep. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Aim for 8 glasses of water a day.
- Try to manage your stress levels. Consider activities such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
- If your symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention. Your doctor may be able to provide you with a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.
What you should look out for
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:
- Severe headache or headache that worsens
- Fever
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe abdominal pain
- Signs of dehydration, such as dark-colored urine, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when you stand up.
