What might be happening
The symptoms you're experiencing, such as the urge to urinate, burning sensation before and after urination, bladder pain, and a tingling sensation in your urethra, could be indicative of a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs are common infections that happen when bacteria, often from the skin or rectum, enter the urethra, and travel up into the bladder.
Another possibility could be a condition called Interstitial Cystitis, also known as painful bladder syndrome. This is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pelvic pain, ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain.
What you can do
While waiting for your appointment with a healthcare provider, there are a few things you can do to help manage your symptoms:
- Drink plenty of water: This can help dilute your urine and ensure that you'll urinate more frequently — allowing bacteria to be flushed from your urinary tract before an infection can begin.
- Avoid drinks that may irritate your bladder: Avoid coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks containing citrus juices and caffeine until your infection has cleared. They can irritate your bladder and tend to aggravate your frequent or urgent need to urinate.
- Use a heating pad: Apply a warm, but not hot, heating pad to your abdomen to minimize bladder pressure or discomfort.
What you should look out for
If your symptoms worsen or if you start to experience high fever, shaking and chills, nausea and vomiting, you should seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a kidney infection, which is a serious condition that requires prompt treatment.
