[20F] Experiencing leg soreness and tingling after semaglutide injection

Patient Description

A 20-year-old female reports soreness radiating down the left leg, starting from the outside top of the thigh to the feet, after administering a 10 mg semaglutide injection at home this morning. The patient mentions a pre-existing tightness in a muscle for about a month, but describes the current discomfort as more pronounced. Massaging the leg sometimes provides relief. The patient also notes a mild nausea, which is considered a normal reaction to the semaglutide injection. There is no indication of injury from recent activity, although the patient did go out dancing the previous night.

What might be happening

Based on the information you've provided, here are some possible explanations for your symptoms:

  • Side effects of Semaglutide: Semaglutide is a medication used to control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Common side effects can include nausea and stomach pain. However, leg pain is not a common side effect. It's possible that the injection site may be causing some localized discomfort, but it's unlikely to cause pain radiating down the leg.

  • Muscle strain or injury: Since you mentioned going out dancing, it's possible that you may have strained or injured a muscle in your leg. This could cause pain and discomfort, especially when moving or putting weight on the leg.

  • Sciatica: This is a condition where the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down to your feet, becomes irritated or compressed. This can cause pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates down the leg.

What you can do

Here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms:

  1. Rest and elevate your leg: This can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

  2. Apply a cold pack: This can help reduce inflammation and numb the area, providing temporary relief.

  3. Over-the-counter pain relievers: Non-prescription medications like ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.

  4. Gentle stretching and movement: This can help keep your muscles flexible and reduce stiffness.

Remember, it's important to get medical attention if your symptoms persist or worsen.

What you should look out for

You should seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Your pain becomes severe or unmanageable
  • You develop additional symptoms such as fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss
  • You have difficulty moving or walking
  • Your leg becomes red, swollen, or warm to the touch

Please remember that this advice is intended to be general in nature, and specific causes may not apply to your personal circumstances. Always consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate examination, diagnosis, and treatment.

It's interesting to hear that your dad experienced something similar! It's always a good idea to keep track of any symptoms and discuss them with a healthcare provider, especially when they seem to coincide with new medications. They can help determine if there's a link and provide guidance on how to manage the symptoms. I hope he's doing well and finds some relief soon!

My dad had this happen to him as well and he wasn't linking it to the semaglutide injection, he wouldn't get it all the time but enough that he was concerned.
