[18F] Experiencing fever, cough, and respiratory symptoms

Patient Description

An 18-year-old female presents with a constellation of symptoms including a persistent cough described as worsening and sounding 'nasty' over a period of two to three weeks, particularly intensifying at night. The cough is rated 6/10 in severity and is not relieved by any measures. Accompanying symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, and headaches that are throbbing and aching in nature, also rated 6/10 in severity, localized to the sides of the head, and have been present for two days. The patient has noted a new finding of firm, bumpy swelling in the neck and mild soreness in the ears, both starting today. There is no reported history of pre-existing conditions, allergies, or current medication use. No recent injuries or incidents that could explain the ear pain have been reported.

What might be happening

Based on the symptoms you've described, here are a few possibilities:

  • COVID-19: Given the current pandemic, your symptoms of fever, cough, body aches, and shortness of breath could be indicative of a COVID-19 infection. The virus can cause a wide range of symptoms, and they can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.

    • Testing is the best way to confirm this diagnosis. Treatment typically involves rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medication to manage symptoms. Severe cases may require hospitalization.
  • Influenza (Flu): Your symptoms are also consistent with the flu, a common viral infection. It's not unusual to have body aches, fever, cough, and headaches with the flu.

    • Antiviral medications can be prescribed by a doctor to reduce the severity and duration of the flu. Rest and hydration are also important.
  • Mononucleosis: Given your age and the presence of a sore throat, swollen neck (possibly swollen lymph nodes), and fever, mononucleosis (or "mono") caused by the Epstein-Barr virus is another possibility.

    • Diagnosis is usually confirmed with a blood test. There's no specific treatment for mono. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter remedies for symptoms are usually recommended.

What you can do

  1. Get tested for COVID-19. This is especially important if you've been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.
  2. Rest and stay hydrated. Over-the-counter medications can help manage your fever and body aches.
  3. Monitor your symptoms. If they worsen or if you develop new symptoms, seek medical attention.

What you should look out for

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath that worsens
  • Persistent pain or pressure in your chest
  • New confusion or inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face

These symptoms can be a sign of a more serious condition. If you experience any of these, seek medical attention immediately.

Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, body aches, and shortness of breath. Testing is the best way to confirm a COVID-19 infection.

How can I differentiate between the flu and COVID-19 based on symptoms?
