What might be happening
Based on the information you've provided, here are a few possibilities:
-
Ovarian Cysts: These are fluid-filled sacs or pockets in an ovary or on its surface. Women have two ovaries — each about the size and shape of an almond — on each side of the uterus. Many women have ovarian cysts at some time. Most ovarian cysts present little or no discomfort and are harmless. The majority disappears without treatment within a few months. However, ovarian cysts — especially those that have ruptured — can cause serious symptoms which include abdominal swelling and pain in the lower abdomen that is severe, sudden, and sharp.
- Treatment: Most cysts go away on their own. However, your doctor may suggest surgery if the cyst is large, doesn't look like a functional cyst, is growing, or persists through two or three menstrual cycles.
-
Ascites: This is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Conditions that can cause severe liver disease can also cause ascites. This includes cirrhosis, hepatitis, and alcohol abuse. Ascites can also occur with cancer.
- Treatment: The treatment for ascites depends on the condition causing it. It may include dietary changes, medication to reduce fluid buildup, draining the fluid, or treating the underlying condition.
-
Ovarian Cancer: This is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries. The female reproductive system contains two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries — each about the size of an almond — produce eggs (ova) as well as the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and abdomen. At this late stage, ovarian cancer is more difficult to treat.
- Treatment: Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus. Chemotherapy is also used.
What you can do
Given the severity and duration of your symptoms, it's important that you seek medical attention as soon as possible. A healthcare provider can evaluate your symptoms and medical history, perform a physical examination, and order appropriate tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.
What you should look out for
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek immediate medical attention:
- Severe abdominal pain
- Rapid increase in abdominal size
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain
- Fainting or loss of consciousness
- Vomiting blood or having blood in your stool
Remember, this advice is intended to be general in nature, and specific causes may not apply to your situation. Always consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate examination, testing, and care recommendations.
