What might be happening
Based on your symptoms, here are a few possible conditions:
- Influenza (the flu): This viral infection can cause high fever, body aches, headache, and sore throat. The fever usually lasts for a few days. Antiviral medications can be prescribed by a doctor if the flu is diagnosed within the first 48 hours of symptom onset.
- Bacterial infection: Certain bacterial infections, such as strep throat or a urinary tract infection, can cause high fever, sore throat, and frequent urination. Antibiotics are typically prescribed to treat these infections.
- Mononucleosis: Also known as "mono" or "the kissing disease," this is a viral infection that can cause high fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. There is no specific treatment for mono; it usually resolves on its own over a period of weeks to months.
- COVID-19: Even though you've had a test, it's possible to get a false negative. COVID-19 can cause a variety of symptoms, including high fever, body aches, and sore throat. If you tested negative but your symptoms persist or worsen, you should get retested.
What you can do
You should seek immediate medical attention given your high fever. In the meantime:
- Continue taking over-the-counter fever reducers as directed on the package, but do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Rest as much as possible to help your body fight off the infection.
What you should look out for
Seek immediate medical attention if:
- Your fever persists for more than a few days despite taking over-the-counter medications.
- You have difficulty breathing or experience chest pain.
- You become confused or have difficulty staying awake.
- You have a severe headache or stiff neck.
