[22M] With red veins and discomfort in left eye

Patient Description

A 22-year-old male noticed red veins and tiny red dots in the corner of his left eye this morning. Initially, there was no pain, but anxiety about the appearance led to a sensation of soreness and strain, particularly on the top and left side of the eye. The discomfort is minor, rated 1 to 2 out of 10. The patient uses screens frequently but hasn't noticed any improvement with breaks. Eye drops were tried without relief. There are no changes in vision, discharge, or tearing. The patient has a history of high blood pressure and chronic anxiety, managed with 25mg of Fluoxetine daily and Hydroxyzine as needed, the latter taken this morning due to anxiety. No known allergies to medications.

What might be happening

Based on your symptoms, here are a few possibilities:

  • Eye Strain: Prolonged screen time can cause eye strain, leading to redness and discomfort. This is common and usually not serious.

    • Treatment involves reducing screen time, taking regular breaks, and using artificial tears to keep your eyes moist.
  • Subconjunctival Hemorrhage: Tiny blood vessels in the eye can break, causing red spots. This is usually harmless and resolves on its own.

    • No specific treatment is needed, but using lubricating eye drops can help with discomfort.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome: This occurs when your eyes don't produce enough tears, leading to redness and irritation.

    • Treatment includes using artificial tears and taking breaks from screens.

What you can do

  1. Reduce Screen Time: Take regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  2. Use Artificial Tears: These can help relieve dryness and irritation.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain eye moisture.
  4. Monitor Symptoms: Use MDandMe to journal your symptoms and track any changes. This can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

What you should look out for

Seek medical attention if you experience:
