What might be happening

Based on the information you've provided, the possible causes of your symptoms could include:

  • Vaginal Yeast Infection: This is a common condition caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. Symptoms typically include itching, burning, and redness in the vaginal area. It's not typically associated with changes in vaginal discharge, but some women may notice a thick, white, "cottage cheese-like" discharge.

    • Treatment usually involves antifungal medication, which can be obtained over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor.
  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): This is a condition caused by an imbalance in the normal bacteria in the vagina. While it often doesn't cause symptoms, some women may experience itching, burning, or a "fishy" odor. However, you haven't reported any unusual discharge or odor, which are common symptoms of BV.

    • Treatment typically involves antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, like Trichomoniasis, Gonorrhea, or Chlamydia, can cause itching and discomfort in the vaginal area. You mentioned having unprotected sex with a new partner recently, which increases your risk of contracting an STI.

    • Treatment depends on the specific STI, but often involves antibiotics.
  • Contact Dermatitis: This is a skin reaction caused by contact with certain substances. It could be that a product you're using (like soap, laundry detergent, or feminine hygiene products) is irritating your skin.

    • Treatment involves identifying and avoiding the irritating substance. Over-the-counter creams and ointments can also help soothe the skin.

What you can do

Given your symptoms and recent unprotected sex, it's important to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation. They can perform tests to determine the cause of your symptoms and prescribe appropriate treatment. In the meantime, here are a few things you can do:

  1. Avoid scratching the area, as this can further irritate the skin and potentially lead to infection.
  2. Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow the area to breathe.
  3. Avoid using any new soaps, lotions, or other products in the vaginal area, as these could be causing irritation.

What you should look out for

If your symptoms worsen or you develop new symptoms, such as unusual vaginal discharge, fever, lower abdominal pain, or painful urination, you should seek medical attention immediately. These could be signs of a more serious condition.

Please remember that while I strive to provide accurate information, I'm not a doctor and this advice should not replace a consultation with a healthcare professional.

What is contact dermatitis and how can it affect the vaginal area?

Contact dermatitis is a skin reaction that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritating substance. In the vaginal area, it can cause itching, redness, and swelling, often due to products like soaps, detergents, or hygiene products.

To alleviate vaginal itching and discomfort at home, avoid scratching the area, wear cotton underwear and loose clothing, and refrain from using new or potentially irritating products. Over-the-counter creams may also help soothe the skin.

That sucks. But we all get those though from time to time. Hard to say what the cause is without a diagnostic test. You can either wait a couple days, use some anti-itch cream from a drug store and see if there is any discharge or odor. If so, then probs gotta see the doc to see if you need antibiotics
